The police will dispatch 31 personnel, including the head of the Major Crimes Investigation Division, to the special investigation team for the insurrection probe.
On June 19, the Special Investigation Unit of the National Office of Investigation at the National Police Agency announced to the media, "In consultation with the special prosecutor's office, we have decided to dispatch 31 personnel, including the head of the Major Crimes Investigation Division."
Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok launched the investigation just six days after being appointed, moving quickly to begin the probe. Although the Special Prosecutor Act allows for a 20-day preparation period to assemble the investigative team, including assistant special prosecutors, and to prepare the office, Special Prosecutor Cho began the investigation immediately on June 18, even before the appointment of assistant special prosecutors, and indicted former Minister of National Defense Kim Yonghyun on charges of obstruction of official duties by deception and instigation of evidence destruction on the same day.
Previously, a police official stated, "We handed over the records related to former Minister Kim to the special prosecutor's office the previous day."
