Ranked Third Nationwide After Seoul and Daegu, and First in Gyeonggi Province for Net Inflow
Population Growth and Improved Educational Environment Lay Foundation for Transformation into an Educational City
Chain of Innovative Initiatives Including Special Educational Development Zone, Autonomous Public High Schools, and IB World School Certification
Yangju City in Gyeonggi Province is emerging as an 'educational hub of northern Gyeonggi' after recording the third highest net inflow of elementary school students in the country.
According to an analysis by Jongno Academy of transfer data disclosed on the Ministry of Education's 'School Info' platform as of May 30, the '2024 net inflow of elementary school students in Yangju City' totaled 964 students.
If the number obtained by subtracting the number of outgoing students from incoming students is positive, it is considered a 'net inflow'; if negative, it is a 'net outflow'.
Last year, the number of elementary school students who transferred into Yangju City was 3,116, while 2,152 students transferred out. The net inflow of 964 students ranked third nationwide after Gangnam-gu in Seoul (2,575 students) and Suseong-gu in Daegu (1,157 students), and was the highest among all cities and counties in Gyeonggi Province.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy given that many areas in the Seoul metropolitan region are currently struggling with a decline in the school-age population and deteriorating residential conditions.
The increase in net inflow is believed to be driven by the expansion of residential infrastructure following the development of Okjeong and Hoecheon New Towns, as well as heightened expectations for educational conditions.
In response to this trend, Yangju City has set the creation of a 'future-oriented education city' as its core objective and is accelerating efforts to strengthen its educational foundation.
The city aims not only to accommodate population inflow, but also to establish a sustainable educational city model in which the growth of each student and the development of the local community create a virtuous cycle.
Additionally, Yangju City is pursuing a strategy to solidify its status as a 'city ideal for raising children' by improving residential conditions and establishing a virtuous cycle of educational innovation.
Yangju Mayor Kang Suhyeon stated, "We will proactively expand educational infrastructure in line with the ongoing inflow of school-age children and establish a future-oriented educational foundation that fosters the growth of both students and the local community."
Meanwhile, Yangju City is actively promoting major educational innovation projects, including designation as a pilot area for the Special Educational Development Zone, the establishment of a separate Yangju Education Support Office, hosting the Gyeonggi Northern Career Education Expo, selection of three new autonomous public high schools (Jagogong 2.0), certification of Hyochon Elementary School as the first IB World School in northern Gyeonggi, and the opening of the ninth Gyeonggi EduTech R&D Lab nationwide.
The city also plans to continue implementing practical education policies that enable the region and education sector to grow together, in close cooperation with the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and other relevant organizations.
