The Agriculture, Fisheries and Maritime Committee of the Chungnam Provincial Council conducted a two-day field visit to the remote island areas of the West Sea on June 17 and 18, inspecting the progress of projects in these island regions and exploring potential development strategies.

At their first destination, Gyeokryeolbiyeoldo, the westernmost island group in Chungnam, the committee received briefings on the illegal fishing surveillance and reporting system, the inspection of navigational aids, and the current status of marine environment monitoring. They also directly visited the site of the Gyeokryeolbiyeoldo Port development project, which is a key initiative of the Chungnam Provincial Government, to assess the progress of the project.

In Oeyeondo, their next stop, the committee examined the site of the marine forest creation project promoted by Chungnam Province, and held a meeting with local residents. During the meeting, they listened extensively to opinions on key issues faced by residents, including the operation of island transportation services, the fishing environment, and living infrastructure.

Oeyeondo is located in Ocheon-myeon, Boryeong City, approximately 40 kilometers from Daecheon Port in Boryeong. Currently, 312 residents from 169 households live on the island. A passenger ferry operates twice a day, and the island is one of Chungnam's representative tourist destinations, attracting about 13,000 visitors annually.

Lee Yeonhee, chairperson of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Maritime Committee (Seosan 3, People Power Party), stated, "Through this field visit, we reaffirmed the strategic importance of Gyeokryeolbiyeoldo as a baseline island in the West Sea for national territorial defense and fisheries resource management. We will actively reflect the voices of the residents, which we gathered through communication with the island communities, in the development policies for the fisheries industry in Chungnam Province."
