Ministry of Science and ICT Accelerates Public Sector AI Adoption... Selects New Projects for AI Expansion Initiative

Integrating AI into the Public Sector for Greater Efficiency
Private Companies Develop Solutions Following Government Agency Requests

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on June 18 that it held a launch briefing for new projects under the "Inter-Ministerial Collaboration-Based AI Expansion Project," which aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the public sector in cooperation with other government ministries.

The Inter-Ministerial Collaboration-Based AI Expansion Project seeks to develop and validate AI services that deliver tangible benefits to citizens and enhance the efficiency of public administration through collaboration between the private sector and the government. Since 2022, the Ministry of Science and ICT has been promoting this initiative as part of the national AI transformation (AX) strategy.

Specifically, the government provides the data and test environments necessary for service development, while companies are responsible for developing the AI services. After field validation, the project aims to introduce these services into the public sector.

This year, in addition to ongoing projects, the Ministry of Science and ICT selected 10 new projects to support the development and validation of AI services. To do so, the ministry solicited project proposals from central government agencies, planned the projects based on demand, and then conducted evaluations to select the final companies that will develop the AI services.

The 10 newly selected projects include: ▲ assessment of imported goods safety ▲ support for 112 emergency call reception and dispatch ▲ customized child care ▲ support for drafting fair subcontracting contracts ▲ AI assistant services for human resources management ▲ intelligent record information search solutions, among others.

Each project will receive support of 900 million won per year for two years. This year, the plan is to develop services by training on ministry data, then validate them in ministry testbeds, and ultimately apply them in real-world settings.

Kim Kyungman, Director of AI Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "We are currently at a critical juncture where the speed of AI transformation determines the nation's competitiveness," adding, "To accelerate national AX, it is essential for the public sector to take the lead in utilizing AI, and as the ministry in charge of AI, we will mobilize the capabilities of both government ministries and the private sector to fully support the adoption and expansion of AI in the public sector."
