President Lee Jaemyung, who is visiting Kananaskis, Canada to attend the Group of Seven (G7) Summit, held a summit meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the 17th (local time).
President Lee expressed his gratitude for the invitation from Canada, which is chairing this year's G7 Summit, and stated, "I will make active efforts to meet the expectations of the international community for Korea." In response, Prime Minister Carney thanked President Lee for his attendance and said, "Let us work closely together to strengthen the partnership between Korea and the G7."
The two leaders expressed their satisfaction that Korea and Canada, as "comprehensive strategic partners," have achieved remarkable progress in various fields, and agreed to further strengthen cooperation, especially in future-oriented areas such as security and defense, energy security, climate change, and artificial intelligence (AI).
In particular, President Lee expressed his intention to further deepen security and defense cooperation with Canada, a long-standing ally and global partner, through Korea's participation in Canada's submarine acquisition project and other initiatives. In response, Prime Minister Carney said that he is well aware of Korea's defense industry capabilities and suggested that the two countries actively cooperate for regional and global security in the future.
The two leaders shared their assessments of the recent situation on the Korean Peninsula and exchanged views on the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East. In particular, they expressed grave concern over the recent worsening of the situation in the Middle East and agreed on the need for tensions in the region to be eased as soon as possible.
