Two Women in Their 20s Extinguish Fire with Hydrant
Busan Saha Fire Station Presents "Commendation for Merit"
Two women in their 20s who quickly extinguished a fire using a fire hydrant after discovering a blaze in a pile of recyclables outside an officetel during the early morning hours have been awarded a commendation by the fire station chief.
On June 17, Busan Saha Fire Station announced that it had presented a commendation in the name of the fire station chief to Si Eun Park (28) and Seung Ah Son (26) for their significant contribution to the initial firefighting efforts at the scene of the fire.
According to Saha Fire Station, the fire broke out at around 3:16 a.m. on May 30 in a pile of recyclable waste adjacent to the exterior wall of an officetel in Hadan-dong, Saha-gu, Busan. There was a gas pipeline next to the recycling collection area where the fire started, creating a situation where the blaze could have escalated into a major fire.
At the time, Park and Son, who were passing by on their way to work, saw the flames and immediately called 119. They then used the fire hydrant installed inside the officetel to begin extinguishing the fire themselves. It was reported that, after receiving brief instructions from the fire authorities during the emergency call, they pulled out the hose and sprayed water directly onto the fire. Thanks to their swift response, the fire was put out after burning only part of the building's exterior wall and some recyclable waste, preventing major damage.

An official from Busan Saha Fire Station stated, "The location where the fire broke out is an area densely populated with officetels, so if the fire had spread, it could have developed into a large-scale disaster. The quick judgment and courageous actions demonstrated by the callers at the scene prevented significant casualties. We express our deep gratitude to both individuals for exemplifying mature civic responsibility."
