Renovation of the Old Memorial Hall at 'Namwon Manin Tomb'

Exhibition "History of Remembrance" Held to Mark Renovation

The Manin Tomb Management Office of the National Heritage Administration announced on June 18 that it has renovated the old memorial hall building at 'Namwon Manin Tomb'.

The building now serves as the annex of the 'Manin Tomb History and Culture Center', which opened in September last year. It was created to solemnly commemorate the historical significance of the Manin volunteers who gave their lives in the Battle of Namwon Fortress. The Battle of Namwon Fortress was a tragic event during the 1597 Jeongyu War, in which a combined force of Joseon and Ming soldiers, along with about 4,000 volunteer fighters and civilians, fought against 56,800 invading Japanese troops and perished in the process.

To mark the renovation, the Manin Tomb Management Office is holding an exhibition titled 'History of Remembrance', introducing the history of Manin Tomb, Chungnyeolsa Shrine, and the Sunuijehyang ritual. The exhibition encourages visitors to reflect on how the descendants of Namwon have honored and commemorated the sacrifice of the Manin volunteers. On display are four documentary paintings of the Battle of Namwon Fortress, a video installation symbolizing an incense burner, and ritual attire, belts, and shoes worn during the Sunuijehyang ceremony.

The exhibition is free of charge for all visitors to Manin Tomb. Visiting hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from March to October, and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from November to February. The exhibition is closed every Monday.
