A practical guidebook for climate adaptation
Robert Pindyck's economic perspective on survival and recovery
Urgent need for investment in adaptation strategies
A practical guidebook addressing climate change solutions has been introduced in Korea. "Adapt: The Climate Crisis Will Not Stop," translated by Professor Lee Jiwoong of the Department of Economics at Pukyong National University, was published this month.
The original author is Robert Pindyck, a world-renowned economist and distinguished professor at MIT Sloan School of Management. The book approaches the climate crisis not merely as an issue of "response" but as one of "adaptation," and explores climate adaptation strategies from an economic perspective. Its subtitle is "Survival and Recovery Solutions for Overcoming Climate Change from an Economic Perspective."
Professor Pindyck diagnoses the climate crisis as an unavoidable reality and emphasizes the need for practical approaches to confront it. He argues that, given the limitations of mitigation alone, investment in adaptation across agriculture, urban areas, and infrastructure is inevitable.
The book analyzes the scientific uncertainties surrounding climate change and the resulting policy and economic dilemmas, and presents concrete adaptation strategies such as building levees, restricting construction in wildfire-prone areas, and developing hybrid crops. The author states, "We must invest in adaptation right now," warning that delaying such investments could lead to enormous social costs.
Professor Lee, who undertook the translation, is an expert in climate economics and game theory. He ensured that the academic depth of the original work was maintained while making it accessible to Korean readers.
The book consists of seven chapters in total. It broadly covers topics ranging from the principles of climate adaptation to the economic and policy shocks brought about by climate change, as well as the possible response measures we can expect. In an era where the climate crisis has become a part of daily life, the book is regarded as an essential read for survival and recovery.
