G1: Policy Needed to Eradicate Violent Crimes Against Women
A Chinese suspect who abandoned the body of a murdered teenage girl in Brazil has been apprehended after fleeing.
On June 16 (local time), Rio de Janeiro police announced in a press release that, through a joint operation with police in the state of Sao Paulo, they had arrested a Chinese national male suspect in the murder of an 18-year-old woman. "The suspect was taken into custody today in the Carapicuiba area of Sao Paulo," the police stated.
On June 14, the body of the 18-year-old victim was discovered in a house under construction in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro. The body was covered with a tarpaulin, and some parts had been mutilated by aggressive dogs. Local police reported, "It is highly likely that the victim was abandoned there to be eaten by the dogs."
The victim had been missing since the early morning of June 12. The victim's family and friends reportedly obtained clues to her whereabouts by independently reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. According to Brazilian media outlet G1, the footage showed the victim riding a bicycle and a man believed to be the suspect moving a blue tarpaulin with a handcart.
Subsequently, Rio de Janeiro police identified the owner of the house as a Chinese man, distributed wanted posters, and tracked his escape route before apprehending him.
The suspect operated a yakisoba food truck near the crime scene and was known for frequently hosting parties where he gathered young people and provided them with alcohol and drugs. G1 noted, "This incident has caused a significant stir among local residents and demonstrates the need to strengthen public policies to eradicate violent crimes against women."
The cause of the victim's death has not yet been determined. According to local police, there were no signs of gunshot or stab wounds on the body.
