Two-Week Joint Inspection of Empty Containers
at Busan Port Begins on June 17
Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Song Sanggeun) announced that, starting from June 17, it will conduct a two-week joint inspection of empty containers at Busan Port for the first half of 2025. This inspection will be carried out in cooperation with the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries (Director Kim Hyejeong), the Yeongnam Regional Office of the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, the National Institute of Ecology, Busan Customs, and terminal operators.
This inspection has been conducted jointly by relevant agencies every year, both in the first and second halves, since 2018. It was initiated after harmful invasive species were discovered in empty containers imported from overseas ports to Busan Port in 2017. The purpose is to prevent the entry of invasive species and to address difficulties faced by truck drivers due to defective containers.
This inspection will assess the following items to determine the degree of defectiveness: ▲ presence of living organisms or remains ▲ need for repair or replacement ▲ need for cleaning or washing.
BPA plans to share the inspection results with relevant agencies and shipping companies to encourage voluntary strengthening of empty container management by shipping companies. The inspection data will also be accumulated, managed, and analyzed for future improvements to the inspection process.
Joo Taegwan, Head of Operations at BPA, stated, "Through regular inspections, we will prevent the entry of harmful invasive species into Busan Port and contribute to creating a clean port free of defective empty containers."
