Chungnam Province Seizes and Collects 430 Million Won
from 800 Million Won in Unused Checks Held by 18 Delinquents
The Chungnam Provincial Government has launched a strong response against high-value and habitual local tax delinquents by investigating unused checks.
According to the province on June 17, a comprehensive investigation into check issuance records of local tax delinquents conducted between April and May revealed that 18 delinquents were in possession of unused checks totaling 800 million won. Of this amount, the province seized the right to claim reimbursement for 430 million won worth of checks that could be subject to attachment.
In one case, a delinquent who had previously claimed financial hardship and requested installment payments was found to be holding checks worth 80 million won. Immediately after the attachment action, this individual voluntarily paid the entire outstanding local tax amount of 24 million won.
A corporation that had defaulted on 10 billion won in national taxes and 1 billion won in local taxes (including 300 million won in Chungnam) paid the entire local tax delinquency of 300 million won within a week after 320 million won in unused checks were seized.
The province is also conducting a detailed analysis of the payment capacity and asset status of over 100 delinquents who have actually used checks, in addition to those with unused checks. If necessary, the province plans to take additional measures, such as compulsory collection.
Lim Seongbeom, Director of the Provincial Taxation Division, stated, "This measure is a practical means to strengthen our response to intelligent and malicious delinquents and to address blind spots in tax delinquency management. We will continue to conduct ongoing investigations and asset tracking of delinquents to ensure fair tax administration."
