On June 17, the Incheon city government announced that it had requested the Ministry of Justice to impose travel bans on 266 individuals who have habitually and significantly defaulted on local taxes, each owing more than 30 million won.
The total amount of unpaid local taxes by these individuals is 23.5 billion won. With approval from the Ministry of Justice, their overseas travel will be restricted from next month through December. Among those subject to the travel ban, 201 individuals have been newly designated this time, while the travel restrictions for 65 individuals have been extended.
Under current law, if a person fails to pay more than 30 million won in local taxes without a valid reason, or if there is concern about fleeing abroad or evading collection, the Minister of Justice may be requested to impose a travel ban.
Previously, the city sent advance notices to encourage voluntary payment, and carried out procedures such as checking the travel records of defaulters, analyzing the value of seized assets, and investigating their living conditions.
An official from the Incheon city government stated, "We will carry out strong collection activities targeting habitual and significant tax defaulters who intentionally avoid payment," adding, "For those who have defaulted due to livelihood difficulties, we will encourage installment payments and provide support by linking them to welfare programs."
