The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on June 16 that the investigation period for the Gwangmyeong Shinansan Line collapse accident Construction Accident Investigation Committee will be extended by three months, until September 14.

Previously, after a collapse accident occurred at Section 5-2 of the Gwangmyeong Shinansan Line construction site on April 11, the committee was formed on April 17 and has since been conducting an investigation. The extension of the investigation period, which was originally scheduled to end on June 16, is to allow for additional investigation and analysis.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the committee has so far conducted three on-site inspections, held six committee meetings, carried out two hearings with related parties, analyzed 3D video footage, and reviewed documents such as design drawings. The committee has been working to determine the cause of the accident through discussions on collapse scenarios by area of expertise.

During this process, the committee determined that additional in-depth reviews of the structural calculations and drawings, geological and ground investigations of the accident section, and structural analysis for each stage of tunnel construction are necessary. The committee decided to conduct further analysis through specialized firms.

Son Murak, a professor at Daegu University and chair of the investigation committee, stated, "We are keeping all possibilities open regarding the cause of the accident and are thoroughly examining even the smallest details from multiple perspectives. We will comprehensively review not only the results of the investigation so far, but also the additional analysis from specialized firms, in order to objectively determine the cause of the accident and promptly establish measures to prevent recurrence."
