Legal Basis Established for Providing Safety Items to Women, Elderly, and Other Vulnerable Groups
The Chungnam Provincial Council announced that the "Ordinance on the Provision of Safety Items for Socially Vulnerable Groups in Chungcheongnam-do," proposed by Council Member Joo Jinha (Yesan District 2, People Power Party), passed the review by the Administrative and Cultural Affairs Committee during the 359th regular session on June 16.
The purpose of the ordinance is to create a safe and comfortable local community by providing safety items to socially vulnerable groups who are easily exposed to crime, enabling them to protect themselves and request assistance in emergency situations.
The ordinance defines socially vulnerable groups as those who are particularly susceptible to crime, including women, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, single-person households, and single-store operators. It stipulates that the governor may provide safety items within the limits of the budget if deemed necessary.
Joo stated, "Crime can happen to anyone, but its impact can be greater and more devastating for the socially vulnerable. This ordinance will help establish a preventive, community-based safety network and contribute to creating an environment where all residents can live with peace of mind."
The ordinance is scheduled for final review and resolution at the 4th plenary session on June 24.
