Pusan National University (President Choi Jaewon) announced on the 16th that it secured one Science Research Center (SRC) and six Basic Research Laboratories (BRL) in the 2025 new group research projects supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea. This achievement places the university first among national universities and in a tie for second place nationwide alongside Korea University and Sungkyunkwan University, following Seoul National University.
Among these, the Science Research Center in the field of natural sciences was awarded to the "Electrochemical Molecular Transformation Research Center" led by Professor Yang Haesik of the Department of Chemistry at Pusan National University. The center will receive up to 11.55 billion KRW in research funding over the next seven years (4+3 years).
In the Basic Research Laboratory (BRL) category, the following projects were selected and will each receive up to 1.5 billion KRW in research funding over three years: Professor Jung Youngmi of the Department of Life Sciences - research on sex-difference gene FPR2-based regulation of liver diseases; Professor Kim Songgil of the School of Mechanical Engineering - research on tribology based on two-dimensional materials; Professor Kim Seontae of the Department of Plant Life Sciences - investigation of mechanisms inducing resistance to rice pests and diseases; Professor Yang Seungyun of the Department of Biomaterials Science - research on multi-active capsule-type artificial pancreas; Professor Ha Gitae of the Department of Korean Medical Science - exploration of biological phenotypes related to hepatic metabolic homeostasis; and Professor Hong Changwan of the Department of Convergence Medical Science - research on NKT cell-based immunometabolic regulation.
This achievement was supported by the strategic efforts of the Pusan National University Research Office (Director Jung Wonho). The Research Office organized a "Research Support Consulting Group" to provide practical support to faculty members, from writing project proposals to consulting and administrative procedures. An advisory group of 82 internal experts contributed to improving the quality of the applications, and consulting fees were also provided to applicants to reduce their burden.
Jung Wonho, Director of the Research Office, stated, "We plan to further expand customized consulting to strengthen research competitiveness," and added, "We will also actively support public projects from institutions other than the National Research Foundation of Korea."
