Global Biohealth Research Leaders Gather in Seoul for "HIROs 2025" Meeting

Strengthening Global R&D Cooperation and Leadership by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute

The Korea Health Industry Development Institute announced on June 16 that it will host the "2025 International Health Research Organizations (HIROs) Meeting" in Seoul over two days, June 16 and 17.

Global Biohealth Research Leaders Gather in Seoul for "HIROs 2025" Meeting

HIROs is a consortium of leaders from institutions that drive global health research and research support, with 34 member organizations from 21 countries participating.

This year's meeting will be attended in person by the heads of 21 organizations from 17 countries, including Jay Bhattacharya, Director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH); Patrick Chinnery, Chair of the UK Medical Research Council (MRC); Jon-Arne Rottingen, CEO of the Wellcome Trust; and Hitoshi Nakagama, President of the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED).

Since joining HIROs in 2015, the Korea Health Industry Development Institute has continued to serve as Korea's only member organization. HIROs holds regular annual meetings to share key updates and issues by country and institution, and to seek joint responses to global health challenges, as well as collaboration strategies for biohealth research and development (R&D).

This year's meeting will cover core topics in global biohealth R&D, including: global biodata; fair use and access to artificial intelligence (AI); multilateral initiatives; multilateral initiatives on climate change and health research funding; strategies for linking and utilizing innovative R&D models to solve common human health problems; and research equity.

In particular, the Korea Health Industry Development Institute has proposed "strategies for linking and utilizing innovative R&D models to solve common human health problems" as a key agenda item. This session will feature presentations from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) under the U.S. NIH, the Wellcome Trust, the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development, Germany's SPRIN-D (Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation), Canada's HERC (Health Emergency Response Agency), and Korea's K-Health Future Initiative.

Through this, it is expected that countries will share their innovative models and engage in in-depth discussions on cross-national cooperation to address common health challenges such as infectious disease response and improving healthcare accessibility. In addition to the official HIROs agenda, a networking dinner will be held after the meeting to provide an opportunity for interaction between HIROs member organizations and key domestic stakeholders.

Chasoon Do, President of the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, stated, "The hosting of HIROs 2025 in Korea is the result of the growth of Korea's biohealth technology and industry, combined with international cooperation efforts. This is not just an opportunity to host a meeting, but a significant chance for Korea to emerge as a global hub for biohealth innovation. It will also help promote Korea's biohealth technology and industry capabilities worldwide and foster collaboration between domestic research institutions and global organizations."
