No Flood Compensation If Sunroof Left Open During Heavy Rain... Financial Supervisory Service Releases Auto Insurance Guidelines

Mr. A suffered damage to the internal electrical wiring and other parts of his parked vehicle due to heavy rain during the monsoon season. He filed a claim for insurance compensation, but it was denied. This was because there were no signs of flooding inside or outside the vehicle, and it was confirmed that the sunroof had been left open during the rain. Mr. A was unaware that if the policyholder's own negligence, such as leaving the sunroof open, is clear, compensation cannot be provided.

On June 16, the Financial Supervisory Service released guidelines for automobile insurance to be mindful of during the summer vacation and monsoon season.

When someone else is driving your car, it is advisable to use the "short-term driver extension rider." This rider allows your automobile insurance coverage to apply in full to accidents that occur while someone else is driving your car.

Mr. B was traveling with a friend's family when his friend, while driving Mr. B's car, rear-ended another vehicle. He filed an insurance claim, but it was denied. This was because Mr. B had selected the "family-limited driver rider" when purchasing his automobile insurance, but according to the policy terms, a friend does not fall within the definition of "family." If you plan to take turns driving with friends or acquaintances during a trip, you should use the short-term driver extension rider. However, since coverage begins at midnight on the day of enrollment, you must purchase it the day before your trip begins.

When you drive another person's vehicle, the "other vehicle driver rider" can be helpful. This rider provides coverage for bodily injury, property damage, and personal injury (including automobile injury) in the event of an accident while driving another vehicle.

If you use a rental car at tourist destinations, it is helpful to use riders that provide coverage for accidents that occur while driving a rental car. If you have an automobile insurance policy in your name, you can use the "rental car damage rider." This rider covers accident damage that occurs while you or your spouse (if included in the driver scope) are driving a rental car. Generally, automobile insurance provided by rental car companies often does not include coverage for damage to the rental car itself (repair costs). By purchasing the rental car damage rider, you can receive compensation for damage to the rental car resulting from an accident while driving it.
