Hapcheon, Uiryeong, and Haman Launch Campaign to Extend North-South 6-Axis Expressway Section

Improving Regional Underdevelopment
Seeking to Overcome the Crisis of Regional Extinction

Hapcheon County in South Gyeongsang Province announced on June 16 that it held a promotional campaign and signature drive for the extension of the Hapcheon-Uiryeong-Haman section of the North-South 6-Axis Expressway at Wanghu Market, coinciding with the market day in Hapcheon-eup.

The event was actively supported by Kim Yooncheol, the governor of Hapcheon County, Jeong Bonghun, chairman of the Hapcheon County Council, Park Yujin, chief of the Hapcheon Fire Station, as well as heads of various institutions and social organizations who participated in the campaign.

The North-South 6-Axis Expressway currently runs from Yeoncheon in Gyeonggi Province to Hapcheon in South Gyeongsang Province. According to the Second National Road Network Comprehensive Plan (2021?2030) announced in 2021, the 164.1-kilometer section between Jincheon and Hapcheon was included in the plan.

However, unlike other north-south axes (axes 1 to 10), which are connected to the Namhae Expressway, only the North-South 6-Axis is cut off at Hapcheon, leaving the central region of South Gyeongsang Province excluded from the national arterial road network. This has been pointed out as a factor hindering balanced national development.

Accordingly, the campaign and signature drive were launched to extend the 35-kilometer section between Hapcheon, Uiryeong, and Haman, thereby improving accessibility to the inland areas of South Gyeongsang Province, addressing regional underdevelopment, and seeking to overcome the crisis of regional extinction.

Governor Kim Yooncheol stated, "If we extend the Hapcheon-Uiryeong-Haman section to connect with the Namhae Expressway, which is the East-West 1-Axis, I believe it will become a major driving force for the three counties to leap forward once again. Furthermore, the three counties will be reborn as hubs of logistics and transportation, providing a new foundation for economic revitalization and population inflow. Therefore, I hope that this promotional campaign and signature drive will not be merely formal events, but serve as an important starting point for mutual development."
