Record-breaking June Rainfall... Busan Hit by Heavy Downpours and Flooding Damage

Heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm per hour in Busan has caused a series of damages both large and small.


According to the Busan Meteorological Administration on the 14th, from the previous afternoon until 4 p.m. on this day, 178.4 mm of precipitation was recorded at Daecheong-dong in Jung-gu, Busan, the city’s main observation point.

By region, Saha-gu recorded the highest precipitation at 180.5 mm, while most other areas saw rainfall between 140 and 150 mm.


In particular, 61.2 mm of rain fell within just one hour after midnight, marking the highest hourly rainfall for June in Busan since modern meteorological observations began in 1904. The previous record for the highest hourly rainfall in June in Busan was 50.1 mm, recorded on June 26, 1971.


The unusual downpour caused flooding in various parts of Busan. A total of 36 reports of rain-related damage or concerns were received by the Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters. At 1:10 a.m., a report was filed that a house in Busanjin-gu was filling with water, prompting the fire department to assist with drainage. Most of the reports were related to concerns about flooding in houses or on roads.


The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency also received a total of 57 rain-related emergency calls. By type, there were 20 reports of road flooding, 16 of manhole backflow, 5 of traffic light malfunctions, 1 rescue request, 8 reports of traffic inconvenience, and 7 traffic accidents. At 2:34 a.m., on a road in Yeonsan-dong, Yeonje-gu, Busan, a woman in her 30s fell into a manhole and was rescued by a nearby resident.


Meanwhile, 23 riverside walking paths and 18 roads that had been closed overnight are now mostly reopened, with most restrictions lifted except for some sections of the Oncheoncheon riverside road.
