Lee Heunseung, a four-term lawmaker from the People Power Party representing Busan Jin-gu-eul, has decided to run in the party's floor leader election.
On June 14, Lee officially announced his candidacy through a statement, declaring, "As the floor leader for everyone, I will build a rational and strong People Power Party."
Lee stated, "After much deliberation, I have decided to step forward with a do-or-die determination to lead the party's unity and renewal, as the party is currently facing a crisis more severe than ever before. I will draw on my past experience to do so."
Lee, who began his career as a parliamentary aide, has served four consecutive terms in Busan Jin-gu-eul in the 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd National Assemblies. He has previously served as chief of staff to the party leader and as chair of the National Assembly's Defense Committee, and is currently chair of the party's National Committee.
With Lee's entry into the race, the People Power Party's floor leader election has become a three-way contest, with Kim Sungwon (three-term lawmaker representing Dongducheon, Yangju, and Yeoncheon in Gyeonggi Province) and Song Eonseok (three-term lawmaker representing Gimcheon in North Gyeongsang Province) also running. The party's floor leader election management committee will close candidate registration on June 14 and hold the election on June 16.
