Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok Meets with Chief of Prosecutors’ Martial Law Special Investigation Headquarters Park Sehyun... First Official Activity

Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok, who is investigating the insurrection case related to the 12·3 Martial Law, met with Park Sehyun, head of the Prosecutors’ Special Investigation Headquarters on Martial Law (Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office), on the morning of June 13.

This meeting took place just one day after President Lee Jaemyung appointed Special Prosecutor Cho, marking his first official activity as he visited the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office to meet with Chief Park. On the morning of the same day, Special Prosecutor Cho released a statement saying, "I will approach this task with the utmost care, as if I were recording official history, and will perform my duties as special prosecutor solely according to the logic of the investigation."

Regarding the direction of the special investigation, he stated that he would provide an explanation once the investigative team is assembled and an office location is selected, and he did not appear before the media. This suggests his intention to proceed calmly for the time being, while also moving forward with necessary procedures swiftly. It is interpreted that Special Prosecutor Cho considered obtaining cooperation from the special investigation headquarters, which has been handling the insurrection trial, as his top priority, and therefore met with Chief Park first. He is believed to have discussed and requested information on the current status of the investigation, as well as the dispatch of prosecutors and investigators.

The special prosecutor’s team for the insurrection case is expected to be the largest in the history of special investigations, consisting of 267 members (1 special prosecutor, 6 assistant special prosecutors, 60 dispatched prosecutors, 100 dispatched public officials, and 100 special investigators). Support from the prosecution’s special investigation headquarters is necessary for a continuous investigation. Special Prosecutor Cho is expected to focus for the time being on appointing assistant special prosecutors, assembling the special prosecutor’s team, and securing office space.
