Seodaemun-gu Rises to Third Place in Seoul for Resident Life Satisfaction
Significant Improvement in Neighborhood Satisfaction and Living Conditions
Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, announced on June 13 that it has seen a sharp rise in "resident life satisfaction," ranking third among Seoul's 25 autonomous districts in both Statistics Korea's "2024 Community Survey" and the Seoul Metropolitan Government's "2024 Seoul Survey." The district jumped 14 places from 17th in 2021 (6.25 points, Seoul average 6.34 points) to 3rd in 2024 with 7.59 points (Seoul average 6.96 points), entering the upper ranks of the city.

"Overall satisfaction with life in the current residential area" also rose significantly, from 12th in 2021 to 6th in 2024. In the "neighborhood satisfaction" category, the district achieved outstanding results across various aspects of living conditions, including ▲sufficient public convenience facilities (2nd), ▲suitability for exercise (3rd), ▲safety (5th), ▲convenience of grocery shopping (5th), ▲satisfaction with walking environment (4th), and ▲satisfaction with commuting and school environments (6th).
In a public opinion poll conducted by the district in December last year, 93.9% of respondents said that "Seodaemun-gu is a good place to live," and 94.6% said they "want to continue living there," confirming a high level of satisfaction with the residential environment.
This change is attributed to resident-focused policies that have prioritized happiness, such as the creation of the global healing destination "Cafe Waterfall," the development of Hwangtotgil and barefoot trails for residents' health, the establishment of a public postpartum care center with a 90% fee reduction for residents, and the operation of the University Union Happiness Campus in partnership with nine universities within the district.
Lee Seongheon, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, said, "Through these survey results, we have once again confirmed that residents are experiencing the key policies of the 8th popularly elected administration," adding, "We will continue to deliver real change to make 'Happiness 200% Seodaemun,' where residents' dreams become reality."
Meanwhile, the "Community Survey" is a statistical survey conducted by Statistics Korea to measure balanced regional development and the quality of life of citizens. Last year, it was conducted with 20,000 households in Seoul, with 1,352 people from 740 households in Seodaemun-gu participating. The "Seoul Survey" is a foundational survey for Seoul's urban policy, comprehensively assessing citizens' living standards, the urban environment, and social perceptions to serve as basic data for policy making.
