Head of Greenhouse Construction Company Arrested for Withholding 1.9 Million Won in Wages from Daily Workers
The Boryeong branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor in South Chungcheong Province announced on June 13 that it had arrested the head of a greenhouse construction company in his 50s on June 12 for failing to pay overdue wages.
According to the Boryeong branch, Mr. A withheld wages from daily workers. Despite repeated summons by labor inspectors, he avoided contact and failed to cooperate with the investigation without any legitimate reason.
Mr. A is accused of withholding 1.9 million won in wages from daily workers while constructing agricultural greenhouses in the areas of Buyeo County, Nonsan City, and Iksan City in North Jeolla Province.
The Boryeong branch obtained an arrest warrant for Mr. A, conducted inquiries at construction sites and temporary residences, and tracked the movement of construction vehicles. Mr. A was arrested near a temporary accommodation in Chwiam-dong, Nonsan City.
During the investigation, Mr. A fully admitted to the wage arrears, paid the entire overdue amount, and was released.
Lee Jeomseok, head of the Boryeong branch, stated, "Even if the amount of unpaid wages is not large, we will respond firmly, including applying for arrest warrants, against employers who deliberately refuse to comply with summons and do not cooperate with investigations."
