Over 10,000 New Corals Planted Through Ocean Observation
Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion Held at the United Nations Ocean Conference
On June 11, Samsung Electronics held a premiere of its self-produced documentary "Coral in Focus" at the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) in Nice, France. The documentary, created by Samsung Electronics, highlights the crisis facing coral reef ecosystems and demonstrates how collaborations utilizing Galaxy camera technology are contributing to the restoration of marine ecosystems.
More than 70 participants, including representatives from international organizations, oceanographers, and marine activists from around the world, attended the premiere. After the screening, a panel discussion was held with Samsung Electronics, marine experts, and the documentary director.

Since last year, Samsung Electronics has been carrying out a coral reef restoration project in partnership with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and the U.S. nonprofit organization Seatrees. The "Coral in Focus" project involves taking underwater photos of coral reefs using Galaxy smartphones in major coral habitats that have recently suffered severe destruction: Florida in the United States, Bali in Indonesia, and Viti Levu in Fiji. The project monitors the current state of coral reefs and contributes to restoration efforts.
Samsung Electronics developed a dedicated "Ocean Mode" for cameras to photograph underwater coral reefs. Local organizations in each region are using the Galaxy S24 Ultra equipped with this mode to capture images of coral reefs on site. Through this project, a total of 17 three-dimensional coral reef restoration maps have been created, and the number of newly planted coral fragments observed in the marine ecosystem has reached 11,046. Ultimately, a total coral reef area of 1,705 square meters has been restored in the ocean.
