Seongnam City Takes Preemptive Measures Against Northward Monsoon and Typhoon Wudip
Inspection of Flood Control Equipment, Evacuation Drills, and Storm Drain Cleaning Completed
Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Sangjin Shin) announced on June 13 that it has established comprehensive measures and is maintaining a proactive response posture to prepare for summer storm and flood damage, as nationwide rainfall is expected due to the early monsoon that began in Jeju and the impact of Typhoon Wudip, the first typhoon of the year.
In particular, as the monsoon front moves north and the rainy season is expected to begin in earnest from late June, Seongnam City is further strengthening its emergency response system.
Sangjin Shin, Mayor of Seongnam, instructed thorough safety management by conducting pre-inspections and taking measures in vulnerable areas to ensure full preparedness against various weather anomalies such as the monsoon, typhoons, and heat waves.
Since May 15, Seongnam City has been fully implementing its comprehensive storm and flood damage response plan. When a typhoon or heavy rain warning is issued, the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters is activated, and a three-stage emergency duty system is put in place. Depending on the level of emergency, public officials are deployed both at the headquarters and in the field to intensify patrols and monitoring in areas at risk of casualties, such as underpasses and the Tancheon Stream.
The Disaster and Safety Situation Room continuously monitors high-risk areas using traffic and disaster CCTV. Real-time updates are provided to citizens through the automatic voice notification system and disaster message boards installed along the Tancheon Stream. In addition, when an incident occurs, relevant departments are immediately notified, and access to the Tancheon Stream is controlled to prevent safety accidents in advance.
Furthermore, since March, the city has completed a comprehensive inspection of flood control materials and equipment, conducted a full survey of areas at risk of casualties, and established resident evacuation plans. In May, Seongnam City conducted the Safe Korea Training for storm and flood preparedness and held flood evacuation drills for residents of semi-basement homes to ensure a swift on-site response in case of a disaster. The city also completed the cleaning of road storm drains.
Sangjin Shin, Mayor of Seongnam, stated, "As heavy rainfall is expected due to the northward movement of the monsoon front and the impact of typhoons, we will make every effort to proactively respond on the ground to protect the lives and property of our citizens."
