Andong City, Gyeongbuk Selected as an 'Excellent Institution' for Disaster Management Evaluation for Three Consecutive Years
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety conducted a comprehensive evaluation from January to April 2025, based on 2024 performance, targeting 318 disaster management agencies nationwide (26 central agencies, 66 public institutions, and 226 local governments). The evaluation included document reviews, on-site inspections, and interviews.
The assessment was carried out based on 43 detailed indicators across six categories: common, prevention, preparedness, response, recovery, and bonus/deduction points. The results for each institution were disclosed in three grades: 'Excellent' (30%), 'Average' (60%), and 'Insufficient' (10%).
Andong City ranked within the top 10% among 226 cities, counties, and districts nationwide, receiving an 'Excellent' grade. As a result, the city will be awarded an institutional commendation from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, along with a prize of 3.95 million won and a special grant of 88 million won.
In particular, Andong City received high marks for being the first in Gyeongbuk to operate a '24-hour Disaster Safety Situation Room' on a permanent basis, establishing a prompt and systematic initial response system for various disasters. The city also analyzed that its effective responses to crisis situations such as large-scale wildfires contributed to its strong evaluation.
Kwon Ki-chang, Mayor of Andong, stated, "Disasters can occur at any time amid the ongoing climate crisis, and the disaster response capacity of local governments is directly connected to the lives of citizens. We will not be complacent with this evaluation result, but will continue to strengthen our disaster management infrastructure and response systems to make Andong a 'safe city' where citizens can live with peace of mind."
Meanwhile, Andong City continues to establish itself as a model for local governments nationwide by proactively implementing safety management policies, including disaster prevention and recovery, safety education for citizens, integrated drills, and manual inspections.
