On June 12, the Department of Social Welfare at Chosun University of Science and Technology announced that adult learners took the lead in organizing a sign language performance.

The recent sign language performance, titled "You Were Born to Be Loved," held on the Chosun University of Science and Technology campus, has become more than just a performance; it has established itself as a symbolic cultural event that fosters solidarity with the local community. Most of the performers were adult learners over the age of 65, who are pursuing academic studies later in life.

Their motivation for studying social welfare is not simply to find employment, but rather to live a life that genuinely helps others, reflecting their personal philosophy.

The sign language performance is more than a simple form of expression; it is a "language of empathy." Hong Kyungja, president of the Social Welfare Department's student association and organizer of the performance, said, "When I first started learning sign language, I felt lost, but I was deeply moved to realize that I could convey my feelings with my fingertips. I am experiencing firsthand that there is no age limit to learning."

These activities are closely aligned with the Department of Social Welfare's philosophy of "field-oriented education."

Kim Naye, head of the Department of Social Welfare at Chosun University of Science and Technology, stated, "We are helping adult learners regain their confidence and grow into professional social workers by providing various social participation activities that allow them to realize their long-held dreams. The life experiences of adult learners offer a depth and insight that go beyond theory, serving as a bridge to hear the voices of the marginalized in our community."

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare at Chosun University of Science and Technology plans to continue expanding programs in collaboration with the local community. In particular, the department is planning initiatives such as a "sign language volunteer campaign" in partnership with local welfare organizations that bring together youth, middle-aged, and elderly participants.
