To commemorate the 30th Marine Day, the Wolseong Headquarters of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power released 60,000 olive flounder juveniles and 120,000 abalone spat, which were farmed using the power plant’s thermal discharge water, in the coastal waters near Cheoksa Hang and Gampo-eup, Gyeongju City, on June 10.
The release of farmed shellfish in the coastal waters near Cheoksa Hang and Gampo-eup, Gyeongju City.
Since the completion of the aquaculture facility utilizing thermal discharge water in 1998, Wolseong Headquarters has been releasing fish juveniles and abalone spat every year since 1999. The project aims to improve the ecological environment of the sea near the power plant and increase fishermen’s income.
From the first year of the project until this year, including contributions from other headquarters, a total of 9.7 million fish and 3.3 million abalone have been released, with the cumulative cost of releases reaching approximately 10.6 billion KRW.
On this day, after the initial release of olive flounder juveniles within Cheoksa Hang, participants boarded fishing boats and completed a second release of abalone spat and olive flounder juveniles in the community fishing grounds along the nearby coast.
The shellfish and fish released this year are valued at approximately 170 million KRW and are expected to contribute to the creation of marine fishery resources near the power plant and to increasing fishermen’s income.
Jung Wonho, head of Wolseong Headquarters, said, “This marks the 27th year of releasing shellfish and fish, and we have made significant contributions to the formation of fishery resources in the area surrounding the power plant. Through this release project, we will continue to play an active role in regional coexistence and in increasing local residents’ income for the next 20 or 30 years.”
