Gijang County in Busan to Launch 'Firefly Ecological Experience Learning' on June 13 with 2,700 Participants

Gijang County will hold its signature summer ecological event, the 'Gijang Firefly Ecological Experience Learning Event,' for three days from June 13 to June 15 in the area around Jangansa Temple.

This year marks the 10th edition of the event, which will take place along a 1.4 km section from the Jangansa Temple parking lot to the valley trail. A firefly observation program will be offered for a total of 2,700 participants.

The exploration program will run three times each day at 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m., and 9:30 p.m. Participation in the third session is only available through on-site registration.

Since 2010, Gijang County has continuously conducted surveys of firefly habitats, confirming the presence of key species such as the Unmunsan Firefly and the Late Firefly. Since 2011, the county has expanded the ecological experience event, focusing on promoting the pristine natural environment through education and tourism programs themed around fireflies.

At the main stage of the event venue, the theater troupe Gamagol will perform their themed show, "It's Okay, Because I Shine!" every day. The Firefly Ecological Learning Center, set up at the venue, will also offer exhibitions and video experience content.

Advance reservations can be made through the Gijang County Agricultural Technology Center website, and on-site registration will also be available. The schedule may be delayed or canceled in case of adverse weather conditions.

County Mayor Jung Jongbok stated, "This event, held in the year marking the 30th anniversary of the restoration of our county, will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the ecological value of Gijang and the significance of sustainable nature conservation." He added, "We have also established an institutional foundation to protect firefly habitats and preserve the ecological environment."

In May, Gijang County enacted the 'Firefly Habitat Protection Ordinance' and is working to preserve ecological resources and promote the image of an eco-friendly city.
