Jeonnam National University Hospital announced on June 11 that it has been selected as a participating institution for the "Development Project for Intermediary Technology Based on Metadata for Healthcare Data," which is overseen by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and promoted by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute.
This project will run for a total of four years and nine months, from April 2025 to December 2029, with a total budget of approximately 7.5 billion KRW. Of this, Jeonnam National University Hospital will be responsible for clinical demonstration in the medical field, with a budget of about 450 million KRW.
The project aims to develop intermediary portal technology that supports metadata-based data search, utilization applications, and matching between supply and demand institutions, so that researchers can efficiently utilize healthcare data scattered across medical and public institutions from a single platform. By allowing researchers to directly design studies and apply for data using metadata provided through the intermediary portal?without prior contact with each institution?the project will expand research diversity and lay the foundation for promoting the secondary use of medical data.
The project is led by the Korea Health Information Service, with Jeonnam National University Hospital, Busan National University Hospital, and Kyungpook National University Hospital participating as a consortium. Each institution will be responsible for specific roles, including generating and quality-checking metadata for their own data, implementing the demonstration portal, and supporting data utilization.
Jeonnam National University Hospital will oversee practical demonstration in real-world medical environments, including: planning annual demonstration studies for the construction of the intermediary portal; conducting preliminary quality checks and generating metadata for its CDM-based data; and deriving intermediary use cases through clinical demonstration. The hospital will also propose secondary utilization structures for various data types and verify the intermediary process of providing raw data to actual researchers.
Ji Youngseok, the principal investigator at Jeonnam National University Hospital and director of the Medical Information Center, stated, "Through this project, we aim to take the lead in establishing a healthcare data utilization ecosystem as a regional hub hospital and to build an environment where researchers can use data more safely and efficiently. We will do our utmost to ensure that this becomes a demonstration study that yields substantial results."
