The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency's Cyber Crime Investigation Unit announced on June 11 that it has launched a preliminary investigation (pre-indictment inquiry) into Yes24, the online bookstore that has been experiencing access disruptions for three consecutive days due to a hacking incident.
Yes24 reported the incident to the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), and the police decided to initiate their own preliminary investigation, taking into account the seriousness of the case.
The police plan to track down the hacker while also determining the exact scale of the damage. A police official stated, "Our first priority is to identify who carried out the hacking," adding, "We will also investigate whether any personal information of members was leaked."
Yes24 has been experiencing access disruptions to its homepage and application for three consecutive days since the early morning of June 9 due to a ransomware hacking attack. All of Yes24's services, including book search and ordering, ticket reservations, eBooks, the electronic library, and Sarak (the reading community), have been suspended.
In a notice posted on its homepage, Yes24 stated, "Our internal investigation has found no indication of personal information leakage," and added, "We will fully cooperate with the investigations by the relevant authorities and will announce the results again."
The company also added, "We are currently preparing specific compensation plans for members who have experienced inconvenience due to the access disruptions."
