The Gwangju City General Construction Headquarters announced on June 11 that partial traffic control will be implemented on the section of Hanam-daero where the 'Road Construction Project between Sangmu District and Cheomdan Industrial Complex' is underway, from June 16 to 20.
The 'Road Construction Project between Sangmu District and Cheomdan Industrial Complex' is a new road construction project that will connect 4.98 kilometers between the rear of the Sangmu District City Hall and the Cheomdan Veterans Hospital, with 4 to 6 lanes. Once completed, the new road is expected to ease rush hour traffic congestion by dispersing the traffic volume on Bitgoeul-daero.
The section of Hanam-daero subject to this partial traffic control is where construction is underway for the (tentatively named) Yeongsangang Bridge, which will cross both the Gwangju railway line and Hanam-daero, with a total length of 880 meters and a width of 21 meters.
To minimize traffic congestion, the General Construction Headquarters plans to install girders (a type of beam placed under the bridge deck) during daytime and nighttime hours, avoiding rush hours, and will flexibly control the road during this period.
Traffic control will vary by date and time depending on the construction schedule and work sections. Four out of six lanes will be temporarily closed, while the remaining two lanes will be used to allow two-way traffic.
Specifically, on June 16 and 17, partial nighttime control will be implemented from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following day. In particular, on the night of June 17, there will be a full closure for 15 minutes every hour. On June 19 and 20, partial daytime control will be enforced from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The city plans to actively respond to minimize inconvenience to citizens by installing guidance signs, banners, and safety facilities near the construction site.
Shin Jaeuk, head of the General Construction Headquarters, stated, "The road construction project between Sangmu District and Cheomdan Industrial Complex is key infrastructure that will help alleviate congestion and disperse traffic within the city center. We ask for the active cooperation of citizens during the construction period. We will do our best to ensure safe construction and minimize traffic congestion."
