OpenAI CSO Jason Kwon to Visit South Korea Again
Focus on Strengthening AI Collaboration with Korean Companies
No Official Meetings with Government Expected This Time
The Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, will visit South Korea just over a week after the inauguration of the Lee Jaemyung administration.
According to the IT industry on June 11, Jason Kwon, CSO of OpenAI, is scheduled to visit South Korea on June 12 and will carry out a one-day itinerary.
When CSO Kwon visits South Korea on June 12, it will be his second visit to the country in about two weeks. Previously, CSO Kwon visited Seoul on May 26, where he announced plans to establish a Korean subsidiary and to begin full-scale business operations in the country. After his visit to South Korea last month, he traveled to several Asia-Pacific countries, including Singapore, Japan, Australia, and India.
During this visit, CSO Kwon is expected to meet with domestic partners, including major corporations. An OpenAI representative stated, "CSO Kwon has an engagement in South Korea on June 12," but added, "We cannot confirm the detailed schedule." However, considering that the government has just been inaugurated and the position of the Senior Secretary for AI Future Planning in the Presidential Office has not yet been filled, it appears unlikely that he will meet with government officials during this visit.
Previously, on June 4, when President Lee Jaemyung began his term, CSO Kwon posted a congratulatory message on social media, expressing his commitment to actively support the government's artificial intelligence (AI) vision. During his visit to South Korea on May 26, which took place during the presidential election period, he met separately with AI policy officials from the central election committees of both major parties to discuss ways OpenAI could cooperate in expanding the national AI infrastructure.
OpenAI completed the registration of its Korean subsidiary, named 'OpenAI Korea Yuhan Hoesa,' on May 14. This marks the third time OpenAI has established a regional office in an Asian country. The decision to set up a Korean branch was prompted by the increasing number of users of OpenAI services such as ChatGPT in South Korea. Following the establishment of the Korean subsidiary, OpenAI also began recruiting for six different job categories to work at its Seoul office.
OpenAI has already established partnerships with numerous Korean companies. It announced financial cooperation with Korea Development Bank (KDB) for the development of domestic data centers and the nurturing of Korean startups. Among IT companies, OpenAI has formed partnerships with Kakao, Krafton, and SK Telecom for the adoption of AI technologies. As a result, OpenAI's models are utilized in Kakao's services, including the AI agent 'Kanana,' and SK Telecom's AI agent 'A.Dot' also leverages OpenAI's large language models (LLMs).
