Taiwanese semiconductor company TSMC reported that its revenue for the month of May rose by nearly 40% year-on-year, driven by strong demand for artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor chips.

According to Bloomberg News on June 9 (local time), TSMC announced that its revenue for May reached 320.5 billion New Taiwan dollars (approximately $10.7 billion), up 39.6% from the same period last year. As a result, cumulative revenue for January to May this year increased by 42.6%, reaching 1.51 trillion New Taiwan dollars.

This continues the strong growth trend following the 48% increase recorded in April. It also meets analysts' average forecast of a 39% increase in second-quarter revenue. However, May revenue was down 8.3% compared to the record-high performance in April.

Revenue continues to grow steadily. This is attributed to the intensifying AI arms race among global IT companies, which has led to consistently rising demand for semiconductor chips produced by TSMC in partnership with Nvidia. In particular, uncertainty surrounding President Donald Trump's tariff policy has prompted a wave of "stockpiling," with companies building up semiconductor inventories in advance.

TSMC CEO C.C. Wei reaffirmed at last week's shareholders' meeting that the company would maintain its previous guidance of "mid-20% growth" in total revenue for 2025 in US dollar terms. He explained, "Demand for AI chips continues to outpace supply."

Nvidia last month dispelled investors' concerns about weakening demand in China by announcing robust revenue forecasts. The company also emphasized that the AI computing market continues to experience exponential growth.
