Ruling Party Floor Leader Candidates Debate... Seo Youngkyo and Kim Byungki Vow to End Insurrection Yonhap News

At the joint debate for the second-term floor leader candidates of the Democratic Party, held at the National Assembly Members' Office Building in Yeouido on June 10, Representative Seo was asked about her goals as the leader of the second-term floor leadership, which will be the first ruling party leadership under the Lee Jaemyung administration. She responded, "All three major special prosecutor bills have already been handled by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, of which I am a member, so we have a thorough understanding of them. I will make it my top priority to recommend special prosecutors as quickly as possible to ensure the special prosecution proceeds swiftly."

Seo further stated, "Through the recommendation of special prosecutors, I will uncover and root out all acts of insurrection that the prosecution and the National Intelligence Service have concealed." She added, "To achieve a complete end to the insurrection, we need prosecution reform, judicial reform, broadcasting reform, and media reform. We will separate indictment and investigation powers for prosecution reform, take a firm stance against interference in state affairs, politics, and presidential elections for judicial reform, and firmly enact the three broadcasting laws related to media reform."

Representative Kim also emphasized the need for a complete end to the insurrection when asked the same question. Kim said, "There is a mountain of things to uncover, such as who planned the insurrection and how extensive it was. If I become floor leader, I will mobilize all available means in the National Assembly, including all standing committees, special committees, and hearings, to reveal the truth and scale of the matter."

He also stated, "We will overhaul and legislate related systems so that no one even dares to attempt an insurrection. These are tasks that the National Intelligence Service has handled for a long time, so I am confident we can do them well."

In addition, both candidates emphasized their commitment to creating a communicative National Assembly. Kim said, "We will recognize the opposition as a dialogue partner and work to restore politics. While we will not compromise with illegality or injustice, we will seek ways for mutual coexistence." He also promised to activate party-government consultative meetings by regularizing meetings between ruling party lawmakers and ministers or vice ministers for each standing committee, as well as to establish a task force to monitor the implementation of regional pledges.

Seo stated, "I will propose a consultative body among the ruling party, opposition parties, and the government so that both sides can work together to realize the people's voice." However, regarding the People Power Party's claim that the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee should go to the opposition, she said, "People Power Party should not even dream about it. The two-year term is fixed, and the number of seats is fixed, so it cannot be handed over to the opposition."
