Expectations for Regional Innovation Based on Industry-Academia Cooperation
Seoul National University of Science and Technology announced on June 10 that it has been finally selected for a total of five projects under the Seoul RISE (Regional Innovation System & Education) initiative.
This selection recognizes the university's research and industry-academia collaboration capabilities, as well as its potential contributions to local community development. It is expected to further elevate the status of SeoulTech. The RISE initiative is a program in which the Ministry of Education transfers the authority to execute university financial support budgets from the central government to local governments, thereby supporting university innovation tailored to regional characteristics and development strategies. As a result of this selection, SeoulTech will receive an annual budget of 2.4 billion won for five years, totaling 12 billion won, from 2025 through February 2030.
SeoulTech has been selected as both a lead and participating university in all four major projects of the Seoul RISE initiative: ▲Enhancing global university competitiveness ▲Strengthening the foundation of Seoul's strategic industries ▲Co-growth with the local community ▲Reinforcing lifelong and vocational education.
In particular, for the 'Activation of the Industry-Academia Cooperation Ecosystem' project, the university plans to establish an innovative industry-academia cooperation ecosystem focused on advanced AI and biotechnology fields by forming a consortium with Yonsei University, centered around its specialized Industry Cooperation Center (ICC).
Additionally, the 'Seoul-Regional Sharing and Cooperation Activation' project, which was selected after overcoming a high competition ratio of 6.7:1, is expected to significantly contribute to bridging educational gaps and promoting balanced development between Seoul and other regions through joint curriculum operations and other initiatives.
The SeoulTech RISE Project Group plans to use this initiative to reorganize internal structures, regulations, systems, and platforms, thereby creating an innovative ecosystem where the university and the local community grow together. The university also aims to collaborate with the local community to establish an innovative co-growth model that contributes to regional development.
President Kim Donghwan stated, "The selection for the RISE initiative is the result of SeoulTech's continuously growing capabilities in education, research, and industry-academia cooperation, as well as its close collaboration with the local community. As the only national comprehensive university in Seoul, we will contribute to regional growth and take the lead in building Seoul's future innovation ecosystem."
