Military: "Conducting a Thorough Investigation into the Circumstances"
An incident occurred in which an active-duty soldier returned a rental car while leaving behind a K-2 rifle, which was then discovered by a civilian who reported it to the authorities.
Newly Developed K2-A Rifle
According to the military on June 10, a non-commissioned officer from an Army unit based in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk area used a rental car on June 5 to escort a newly graduated recruit from the training center to the unit.
The recruit was carrying a K-2 rifle that had been issued to him, but left it in the car when he got out. The non-commissioned officer who was escorting him also returned the rental car without realizing that the recruit's rifle was still inside.
The unit only became aware of the incident three days later, on June 8, after receiving a police report from a civilian who found the rifle in the rental car. The rifle was then retrieved. The unit had not realized the rifle was missing for three days after it had been lost.
The Army stated, "On June 8, a report was filed with the police that a firearm had been found inside a rental car, and the responsible unit retrieved it. The military investigative agency is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances, and the Army will take necessary follow-up measures based on the results of the investigation."
