Operation of 'Slow Mailbox' at Jeju Store
Postcards Made from Upcycled Milk Cartons
Starbucks Korea has introduced its first store in the country with an installed mailbox, unveiling the location in Jeju.
On June 8, Starbucks announced that it is running an upcycling campaign at the Jeju Sehwa DT branch to commemorate World Environment Day (June 5). As part of the campaign, the company is giving out postcards made from recycled milk cartons collected at its stores.
A 'Slow Mailbox,' donated by the Jeju Regional Post Office, has been installed at this store. Starbucks is offering the upcycled milk carton postcards to customers who post a photo taken at the Jeju Sehwa DT branch's photo zone on social media with the hashtags '#Starbucks', '#JejuSehwaDT', and '#EnvironmentFoundation'. If the customer places the postcard in the Slow Mailbox, it will be sent free of charge to the address written on it one year later.
The upcycled milk carton postcards are made from recycled paper that contains 30% milk cartons, which were collected on a trial basis from 58 Starbucks stores in the Daejeon area starting in October last year. These postcards embody the values of resource circulation and environmental protection.
Kim Sukjin, manager of the Starbucks Jeju Sehwa DT branch, said, "By using environmental funds accumulated from a portion of the store's profits, we are able to give back to customers and the local community with upcycled milk carton postcards that carry the meaning of upcycling." Kim added, "I hope people will create unique experiences and precious memories in Jeju with the Slow Mailbox, which has been installed for the first time at a Starbucks store nationwide."
Opened in November 2023, the Jeju Sehwa DT branch is a 'Community Store' that returns a portion of its profits to the local community. Starbucks has been allocating 300 KRW from every item sold at the Jeju Sehwa DT branch to an environmental fund, which is used to operate various eco-friendly programs such as resource upcycling campaigns, environmental lectures, plogging, and environmental film festivals.
