Gwanak District to Build Public Parking Lot in Daehak-dong, an Area with Frequent Parking Disputes Among Studio Apartments and Gosiwon

117 Spaces Near Seonmin Church, Completion Set for 2028
Selected for Subsidy Program, 16.4 Billion KRW in City Funding Secured

A large-scale public parking lot with 117 spaces will be built in Daehak-dong, Gwanak District, Seoul, an area densely populated with multi-family and multi-household residences, studio apartments, and Gosiwon.

On June 9, Gwanak District announced plans to complete the 'Daehak-dong Public Parking Lot' by 2028. The facility will be located on a 1,488-square-meter site at 1551-1 Daehak-dong (near Seonmin Church), with five above-ground floors and a total floor area of 4,423 square meters. The district expects that this project will not only alleviate the parking shortage for local residents but also significantly improve the pedestrian environment, which has been hampered by illegal parking and stopping.

The district recently achieved the distinction of being selected for the '2026 Autonomous District Joint Parking Lot Subsidy Program' organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. As a result, Gwanak District will receive 16.4 billion KRW in municipal funding, enabling the full-scale launch of the 'Daehak-dong Public Parking Lot Construction Project.' The total project cost amounts to 30.3 billion KRW.

Daehak-dong has a residential parking lot supply rate (excluding apartment complexes) of 68.3%, making it one of the areas in Gwanak District with the most severe parking shortages. There have been constant demands for the construction of parking facilities, and as the number of office workers living in the area increases due to lower rental costs compared to other districts, parking demand continues to rise.

Gwanak District has pursued parking lot construction through various means, including the use of public land and the purchase of private land. However, the project had stalled due to conflicts among residents over site selection. In response, the district held four resident briefings last year to gather public opinion, and after conducting feasibility reviews by external experts in safety, technology, and economic viability, it selected the final site.

The district anticipates that the project will help revitalize the local economy, which has stagnated since the abolition of the National Judicial Examination, and further boost the 'Nokdu Alley-Type Shopping District,' designated in November last year.

Meanwhile, the district is also preparing to complete the 'Moraenae Park Public Parking Lot' (72 spaces) in Nakseongdae-dong by December this year. Efforts are also underway to expand public parking facilities, including the 'tentatively named Sangdo Neighborhood Park Underground Public Parking Lot' (128 spaces) in Euncheon-dong and the 'Haetae Park Underground Public Parking Lot' (83 spaces) in Seorim-dong.

Park Junhee, Mayor of Gwanak District, stated, "When I meet with residents, parking complaints are the most common issue. The creation of public parking lots is a matter directly related to residents' daily lives," adding, "We will do our utmost to enhance resident convenience by continuously expanding parking infrastructure."
