Intensive Inspections Planned for Salmonella and Other Bacteria

The Jeonnam Provincial Animal Hygiene Laboratory is launching microbial inspections, including contamination indicator bacteria, on beef, pork, chicken, duck, and goat meat from all slaughterhouses to ensure a safe and hygienic supply of livestock products during the summer, when the risk of food poisoning is high due to rising temperatures and the rainy season.
This inspection aims to assess the hygiene management standards of slaughterhouses and to prevent microbial contamination.
The plan is to conduct intensive inspections for E. coli counts, total bacterial counts, and Salmonella bacteria at 20 slaughterhouses in Jeonnam, including the Naju Nonghyup Livestock Products Market, targeting cattle, pigs, chickens, ducks, and goats.
If the inspection results exceed the recommended standards, hygiene supervision at the relevant slaughterhouse will be strengthened, and compliance with hygiene management standards, internal hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) standards, and facility standards will be reviewed.
If any violations are found during the inspection, actions will be taken in accordance with relevant regulations.
The Jeonnam Provincial Animal Hygiene Laboratory continues to conduct weekly tests for microbial contamination?such as E. coli counts and total bacterial counts?and tests for harmful residues in meat, in addition to thorough slaughter inspections, to prevent food poisoning incidents caused by pathogenic microorganisms, as slaughterhouses are the first step in the distribution of livestock products.
The laboratory is also making every effort to ensure the safety of livestock products by conducting random sampling inspections at livestock product processing plants and retail outlets, which are distribution stages after slaughterhouses.
Jeong Jiyeong, head of the Jeonnam Provincial Animal Hygiene Laboratory, stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure the distribution of livestock products that consumers can eat with confidence."
