Parked Cars Jam the Narrow Access Road

Calls for Improved Management Ahead of Official Opening Next Month

On June 6, the first day of the June holiday, Sinheung-ri Beach in Jocheon-eup, Jeju City was crowded with people, resembling the peak summer season. Tents were densely set up all along the beach, and the sandy shore was filled with tourists in swimsuits and families on outings.
However, the sudden influx of people has led to traffic congestion and disorder. In particular, the access road to the beach is narrow, and parked cars made it difficult for vehicles to pass each other, causing significant inconvenience.
Local residents expressed concern, saying, "This always happens during summer holidays, but today was especially bad," and added, "It was so crowded that even a fire truck would have had trouble passing through."
Near the entrance to the beach, camping equipment and tents were set up indiscriminately, making it difficult for people to pass. Some tourists cooked food on-site or parked their vehicles illegally, leading to conflicts with other visitors.
Amid this chaos, there was no visible presence of parking guides or marine safety personnel to maintain order. The apparent lack of intervention from the authorities or relevant agencies seems to have further exacerbated the disorder.
Jeju Province is set to officially open its beaches in July. However, with the heat arriving earlier than usual and the long holiday, vacationers are flocking to the beaches ahead of the official opening, creating a management vacuum. As a result, there are growing calls for the authorities to take preemptive measures and establish traffic and safety plans as soon as possible.
Tourist A said, "Jeju is beautiful, but seeing such disorder and campers occupying most of the beach makes me less inclined to visit again."
Meanwhile, Sinheung-ri Beach has recently gained attention on social media and YouTube as a 'hot place' in Jeju, attracting campers and visitors from outside the area. However, there is also criticism that preparations for safety and order management are lacking, despite the beach's popularity.
