Report Filed in Cheongju... Police Investigation Underway

On June 6, Memorial Day, a pile of standard garbage bags containing the Taegeukgi flag was found on the roadside in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province.

According to the police and other sources, in the afternoon near Cheongju Agricultural High School in Naedeok-dong, Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju, a resident identified as A discovered the scene and reported it to the local government’s civil complaint center and to the police. The police confirmed the situation at the site and are currently investigating the exact circumstances, including efforts to identify the person who discarded the flags.

Resident A stated, "I don't know who did it or for what reason, but since it is Memorial Day, I was shocked to see so many Taegeukgi flags carelessly thrown away in several garbage bags, so I reported it."

The Taegeukgi flag must be managed in accordance with the National Flag Act. When the flag is damaged, it should not be left unattended or used for other purposes; it must be disposed of properly, such as by incineration.

For ordinary households, due to concerns about fire or other safety accidents, damaged flags should be placed in Taegeukgi collection boxes located at nearby administrative welfare centers.

Simply discarding a damaged Taegeukgi flag constitutes a violation of the National Flag Act. If intent is established, violators may be punished under the criminal code for flag desecration.
