On June 5, Kang Kijeong, mayor of Gwangju, emphasized, "Now, our remaining task is to ensure that the future of Gwangju is clearly reflected in the national policy agenda of the Lee Jaemyung administration."
At the 'June Regular Assembly' held in the main conference room of city hall that afternoon, Mayor Kang stated, "The pledges made for Gwangju must be adopted as national policy tasks and become firmly established in the lives of our citizens." He expressed his gratitude to the public officials who have worked for the happiness of the citizens and encouraged them, saying, "Take a brief moment to catch your breath, then return to your original mindset and continue to work hard."
During the presidential election, Mayor Kang made significant efforts to ensure that Gwangju's pledges were reflected, including operating a 'weekly Yeouido office' and meeting with politicians from various parties to persuade them. Additionally, Gwangju City, the Office of Education, and the five autonomous districts collaborated to launch the 'Voting is Power' campaign targeting youth, workers, and migrant women, working tirelessly to increase voter turnout in Gwangju. As a result, Gwangju recorded its highest voter turnout in a presidential election since the 15th presidential election in 1997, when Kim Daejung was elected president.
These efforts were made because the future of Gwangju?over the next five, ten, or more years?depends on which policies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and future mobility, are included in the presidential pledges. In fact, out of 30 projects proposed by Gwangju City, including the establishment of a super-scale AI computing center linked to the AX Demonstration Valley, 23 projects, or 76.7%, were reflected in the presidential pledges.
Gwangju City is accelerating efforts to ensure that regional presidential pledges are included in the national policy agenda, including the creation of a national AI pilot city, the establishment of a state-led civil-military integrated gateway airport in the southwest region, the development of Korea's leading mobility city, the promotion of the Asia Culture Centered City 3.0 era, and the creation of a vibrant waterfront city along the Yeongsangang River and Gwangjucheon through the establishment of a water circulation system in the Yeongsangang River basin. To achieve these goals, the city plans to actively develop detailed implementation plans for the pledged projects and work to secure government budget allocations.
