Decision on Position to Be Made on the 9th
The emergency committee members of the People Power Party collectively offered to resign, taking political responsibility for the party's defeat in the presidential election.
Kwon Sungdong, floor leader of the People Power Party, is speaking at the members' meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul on the 5th.
Seo Jiyeong, the party's spokesperson for the National Assembly, announced at the members' meeting held at the National Assembly on the morning of the 5th that emergency committee members Lim Ija, Choi Hyeongdu, and Choi Boyun, as well as ex officio emergency committee member Kim Sanghun, chair of the policy committee, had expressed their intention to resign. Kwon Sungdong, the floor leader and another ex officio emergency committee member, had previously announced his intention to step down as well.
Kim Yongtae, chair of the emergency committee, decided to gather opinions within the party and deliberate before making a final decision regarding his position at the members' meeting scheduled for the 9th. Park Hyungsu, the party's chief deputy floor leader, told reporters after the meeting that "there was general agreement that political responsibility should be taken" regarding Kim's position, but also noted, "Some suggested that it would be better for him to take innovative measures first and then resign."
Previously, Kim told reporters, "I am listening to many opinions from lawmakers regarding my position," and clarified, "I have not offered to resign." He added, "I believe that the commitment to reflect deeply on the election process must continue without interruption, and I have repeatedly emphasized that there are many areas where the party needs reform." He continued, "For example, during the presidential election, we said we would nullify the party's official stance against impeachment, and I think correcting that should be a priority."
Despite offering to resign, Kwon will continue to fulfill his duties as floor leader until a new leader is elected. Park, the chief deputy floor leader, explained, "When the floor leader resigns, there is no concept of an acting leader. Although he has expressed his intention to step down, to prevent a leadership vacuum, he must continue to perform his duties until a successor is chosen."
