Namdong-gu, Incheon announced on June 5, 2025, that it had collected a total of 210 kg of used batteries through a focused collection campaign targeting district office employees as part of its environmental protection efforts.
The campaign was conducted in June, which is designated as Environment Month. Employees who brought used batteries on their way to work could exchange one set of new batteries (2 pieces) for every 20 used batteries. In addition, as part of a resource circulation campaign, biodegradable scrubbers and reusable shopping bags were distributed.
Used batteries contain hazardous heavy metals such as mercury, nickel, zinc, and cadmium. If disposed of together with regular waste, they pose a risk of fire or explosion. Furthermore, when incinerated or landfilled, these substances can leach into the air, soil, and groundwater, causing severe environmental pollution. Therefore, used batteries must be disposed of separately.
Namdong-gu, Incheon is conducting a used battery collection campaign targeting district office employees.
The district plans to encourage voluntary participation from residents by supporting used battery collection. Through these efforts, the district aims both to prevent environmental pollution and to promote resource recycling by extracting metals contained in used batteries.
Namdong-gu also plans to continue its collection support project by operating a focused used battery collection period at approximately 80 schools in the district until November.
Park Jonghyo, head of Namdong-gu District Office, urged, "We ask for active participation and cooperation from residents to achieve this year’s used battery collection target of 74 tons, which is a 7% increase compared to last year."
