Yeonggwang County in South Jeolla Province announced on the 5th that the "2025 Yeonggwang County Governor's Cup Dano National Kite Flying Competition," hosted and organized by the Beopseongpo Folk Kite Research Institute, was successfully held over two days from the 30th to the 31st of last month at the Beopseongpo Seonchang area.
This competition, held in celebration of Dano, was designed to commemorate the historical significance of the signal kite, which was used as a military communication tool during wartime in the Joseon Dynasty. It also aimed to continue the tradition of Beopseongpo folk kite flying, which has since become a seasonal custom to ward off misfortune and pray for blessings.
In particular, this year's competition showcased the artistry and technical skills of traditional kite flying, with Cheon Younggeun (age 74, Beopseong-myeon) winning the amateur division and Lee Deokyoung (age 71, Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province) winning the professional division, both demonstrating outstanding kite flying abilities. The scenes of kites soaring against the backdrop of the wide-open Beopseongpo Port provided visitors with great inspiration and enjoyment.
Kang Chunkwon, Director of the Beopseongpo Folk Kite Research Institute, stated, "Through this competition, we aim to widely promote our region's unique traditional culture and will continue our efforts to ensure it is passed down through generations."
An official from the county said, "Our county will continue the legacy of Beopseongpo folk kite flying, preserve and develop our traditional culture, and support the Dano Kite Flying Competition so that it can establish itself as the premier national kite flying competition."
