Challenge of Creative Seismic Design
Middle and High School Students in Yangsan
to Compete in Seismic Design Event
Yangsan City in South Gyeongsang Province announced that the 'Yangsan City Middle and High School Students Seismic Design Competition,' hosted by the Pusan National University Earthquake Disaster Prevention Research Center, will begin accepting applications on June 2 and will recruit participants until June 27.
This event is scheduled to take place on July 25 as a special event of the '2025 Structural Seismic Design Competition.' It will be open to students currently enrolled in middle and high schools located in Yangsan City. Teams of four can participate, and applications can be submitted through the website of the Pusan National University Earthquake Disaster Prevention Research Center.
Participating students will create models using materials provided in advance under the theme 'Protect Yangsan Tower!' in preparation for a major earthquake disaster scenario at Yangsan Tower, which offers a panoramic view of Yangsan City.
On the day of the competition, the models built will undergo simulated earthquake tests to select the safest Yangsan Tower that can withstand the longest and remain the most robust.
This unique competition, designed to make the relatively unfamiliar topic of earthquakes more engaging, will present a total of 10 awards, including the Yangsan Mayor's Award and the Yangsan Office of Education Superintendent's Award, to 10 teams, including one grand prize team.
An official from Yangsan City stated, "We look forward to seeing students' ideas for structural solutions based on their understanding of building collapse accidents through this competition. We hope this will not only be an opportunity to experience the importance of seismic design, but also serve as a stepping stone for students to become future leaders in the field of seismic structures."
