Kim Yongtae Meets President Lee: "Serious Concerns Over Public Official Election Act and Court Organization Act"

Emphasizing the Importance of "National Unity" in Meeting with President Lee
"If Cooperative Politics Is Pursued, People Power Party Will Also Actively Cooperate"

Kim Yongtae, Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, had a luncheon with President Lee Jaemyung on June 4 and expressed concerns about the amendments to the Court Organization Act, Criminal Procedure Act, and Public Official Election Act being promoted by the Democratic Party of Korea.

During his congratulatory remarks at the luncheon commemorating the 21st Presidential Inauguration, held at Sarangjae in the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, Kim said to President Lee, "Congratulations on your election." He added, "If the President and the ruling party recognize the core democratic value of proportional representation and strive for cooperative politics, the People Power Party will also actively cooperate where possible."

He particularly emphasized, "National unity requires that those in power refrain from actions that are sources of concern for the opposing side, in order to bridge the deep divide between political camps."

Kim further stated, "I am deeply concerned about the ruling party's plan to process the amendments to the Court Organization Act, Criminal Procedure Act, and Public Official Election Act at the plenary session tomorrow."

The amendment to the Court Organization Act, promoted by the Democratic Party, centers on increasing the number of Supreme Court justices. The amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act stipulates that criminal trials are to be suspended when a person is elected President. The amendment to the Public Official Election Act removes the 'act' requirement from the crime of spreading false information.

Kim added, "I hope that the heavy tasks of achieving national unity and national reform will be accomplished successfully."

After the luncheon, speaking with reporters, he also pointed out that the Democratic Party's push to process the amendment to the Court Organization Act is "very far removed from the national unity that the President spoke of."
