Uichang and Seongsan Sports Centers to Open Spectator Seating Free of Charge for Four Months from June to September
With record-breaking heat waves predicted and the early onset of summer heat this year, the Changwon Facilities Management Corporation in Gyeongnam will open the spectator seating areas at the Uichang Sports Center and Seongsan Sports Center ice rinks as free 'cooling shelters' starting in June, one month earlier than usual.
The corporation plans to open the ice rinks, which are always maintained at low temperatures, so that citizens exhausted by the heat can enjoy a cool break while watching skaters from the spectator seating areas.
The cooling shelters will be available for four months, until September 30. Operating hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and public holidays.
The Uichang Sports Center has 376 spectator seats and the Seongsan Sports Center has 205 seats. The average temperature in the seating areas is around 6 to 7 degrees Celsius, so visitors are advised to bring outerwear to avoid catching a cold during extended stays. However, those who wish to skate on the ice rink must purchase an admission ticket.
Lee Kyungyun, acting president of the corporation, stated, "I hope the ice rink will serve as a summer retreat and become a space where citizens can improve their health and enjoy their leisure time."
