"We Will Enforce Strict Crackdowns Again in Autumn"

On June 4, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) announced that the Gangwon Wildfire Prevention Center (Director Lee Sung-jin) conducted a joint inspection targeting illegal burning of agricultural by-products and waste in all 18 cities and counties in the province, in response to the spring wildfire-prone season. The inspection was carried out by the forestry, agriculture, and environment departments. As a result, a total of 26 violations were detected, and fines amounting to 6.47 million won were imposed.

This inspection was conducted from March 3 to May 15, with a total of 475 inspectors carrying out 146 intensive checks. Areas within 100 meters of forests were monitored by the forestry and agriculture departments, while other areas were overseen by the environment department, establishing an efficient and systematic inspection system.

The main violations were found in Jeongseon (6 cases), Gangneung (5 cases), and Samcheok (4 cases). In addition, on-site guidance was provided to 3,961 individuals to prevent illegal burning.

In particular, this inspection focused on immediately imposing fines for violations, aiming to raise public awareness of wildfire prevention and heighten vigilance against illegal burning.

A Gangwon Province official stated, "Careless illegal burning can quickly escalate into a large-scale wildfire. Therefore, we will continue to eradicate illegal burning through strict inspections and penalties." The official added, "We also plan to carry out the same type of joint inspections during the upcoming autumn wildfire prevention period in November."
